Review by jackr for Café Calbay

La Grange is home to many decent restaurants, some better than others, many rather expensive compared to others. I have lived there for 21 years and have tried them all. Cafe Calbay is my all-around favorite. The staff is friendly, the décor interesting, the food is very good, prices are very reasonable, and the service generally outstanding. The exception to service can occur if 10 or 15 people all walk in at the same time, but under the same conditions slowdowns will occur in every restaurant. Breakfast entrees are in the $5 to $10 range with most around $7, plus coffee. I’ve had their 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 bacons; biscuits and gravy; good old-fashioned oatmeal; hamburger steak and eggs; and Classic Calbay omelet (bacon, mushroom, potato and American cheese). All were outstanding in quality, quantity, presentation and value. Lunch is in the $6 - $7 range, and again I have never been disappointed. They do a nice job on the Reuben. The post “I 'experienced' the Stuffed French Toast which was the worst invention ever - french toast with a slab of cream cheese in the middle - two opposing tastes” made me laugh. That combination, while not my favorite, has been available for years in many restaurants around the country. Reviews are opinions. My opinion of this quaint little diner is “Five Stars”.
